How to colour block

Colour blocking involves dressing up in a block of different solid colours and by solid I mean without prints or patterns. Kenyans are not quite experimental with this part of style, perhaps its the belief that they will end up  looking like the human rainbow. But I can assure y’all that its quite fun and safe. Here are some tips and tricks to help you along the way:-

  • Anchor your outfit with neutrals such as black, beige or grey.
  • If youre  too afraid of using bright colours, try colour popping. This involves wearing one popping colour from head to toe but then accessorizing with a completely different colour.
  • Stick to simple shapes  such as maxis or pencil skirts.
  • You can also try colour toning -it uses shades within the same family e.g royal blue and purple. Its a more conservative and grown up look.Opt for metallic, neutral or black accessories.
  • NOTE: Keep colours in the same saturation. Pastels with pastels, neons with neons.
Here are a few pics of some celebs illustrating some colour combinations.

Rocker chick

Oh how I miss  my rocker days of Converse sneakers, skull necklaces and love for rock music.Seriously I would wear my abaya, sneakers, hijab and a hoodie. No make up ,no accessories and no colour. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it would have been great  if I had discovered my love for fashion early (haha thats all Im sayin)

I was on the internet and came across some article on  Goth Muslimas and the article claimed  that this lifestyle is not in line with Islam while the comments  defended it saying it is merely an expression of oneself.Id have to agree that fashion is merely meant to express your identitiy ,an identity and has no connection with religious belief.

Rock on!

Pink affair

I was cleaning out my closet (I hope you are all singing Eminem’s song in your head- evil laugh)  and I realized that most of my headscarves are pink! And most of my clothes too!I think its safe to assume ,my tom boy days are over:(

I got this jacket from a shop in Eastleigh (dont ask me which one because I randomly go the stores) as well as the maxi skirt.I love the detailing on the jacket and the in built belt that comes with the skirt.

Inspiration

I have been wearing the hijab since I can remember but only until recently was I so enthralled by this garment. Before , in my teenage years it was either lying loosely on my shoulders, lazily covering my head or not there at all.  As I grew older I began to see its importance , its necessity and its place in my life.

Recently, I saw a post about the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Tawakkul Karman (the mother of the Yemeni Revolution) and I was so wowed by her! This is what she had to say when asked about her Hijab by journalists and how it is not proportionate with her level of intellect and education:

“Man in early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what I’m wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. It’s the removal of clothes again that is a regression back to the ancient times.”
